Earlier today I wrote about the release of the new Amex Gold card. You can read the review here. The card is getting a few upgrades in benefits and design. But it will also cost $55 more per year. Cardmembers will earn 4X at restaurants, which is probably the best rate out there if you value Membership Rewards. 4X at supermarkets is also a very good rate, only topped by a couple of cards. There’s also a new $120 dining credit which gives enrolled Card Members up to $10 per month in statement credits.
The main issue was the signup bonus which was only 25K plus 20% at restaurants up to $100 per year. Now there’s a way to get double that bonus through referrals. Update: public bonus is also at 50K.

Applying for the Card

This is considered the same product as the old card. So if you have had the Amex Premier Rewards Gold card in the past you will not be eligible to get the signup bonus on the new Amex Gold Card. If you’re not sure if you’ve had that card in the past, here’s how to check.

Guru’s Wrap-Up
With the higher 50K bonus this card makes more sense now. But keep in mind that you still need to pay the $250 annual fee, so it’s not as good as the bonus you could have received just a day ago on the old Premier Rewards Gold card. I doubt we’ll see the annual fee waived any time soon, since the card now offers better earning rates on two popular categories such as supermarkets and restaurants.
