Amex Extends Spending Period for New Card Bonuses by 3 Months

American Express is helping new cardholders who have signed up (or sign up in the next 2 months) for a card with a welcome bonus, by extending the spending requirement period by three months. The extension is due to the coronavirus outbreak that has caused a decline in spending for most people.

This extension applies to cards approved between December 1, 2019, and May 31, 2920 for which you are eligible for a welcome offer. It applies to both personal and business credit cards. Here’s the notice below:

It looks like this extension will not apply to upgrade bonuses.

Guru’s Wrap-up

This should be helpful especially for some of these welcome bonuses that have big spending requirements such as Amex Business Platinum or Amex Blue Business Cash. It should be automatically applied to a card with a welcome bonus, but it still might be a good idea to reach out to Amex and get some kind of confirmation for now.

It is pretty generous actually and hopefully other issuers will follow. With more time to do your spending you will not be forced to venture outdoors.

  1. What about Wells Fargo and Schwab cards?

  2. where do you see this?

  3. I definitely did NOT think Amex would do something like this.

    1. I would still try to meeet MSR within original timeframe. Less reason for Amex to look at your account.
