American Express Cardholders Can Now Use Chrome’s Virtual Cards

Google announced this week that it has expanded Chrome’s “virtual credit card” safety feature to American Express customers. This option launched last year for Capital One customers only.

When you’re making a payment in Chrome and come across the field for entering the 16-digits of your credit or debit card, Google will ask if you want to use a virtual number instead. The feature is designed to protect you from online fraud by withholding your actual card number from merchants. If an online merchant suffers a data breach, the virtual card number can be replaced, and you won’t have to replace your physical card.

You can manage all your physical and virtual cards at pay.google.com. Here you will be able to see your current cards, add new ones, access created virtual card numbers, and see recent virtual card transactions.

American Express customers can create a virtual card by linking their card to their Google account. From there, Google Chrome and Android will show the option to use a virtual card instead of the standard card number when making online purchases.
