Starwood’s annual Category changes will take effect on March 1, 2016. A substantial number of their properties, 282 hotels, are changing categories. That’s about a quarter of the SPG lineup.

As expected, this means that SPG hotels are getting more expensive, but not all of them. 168 hotels are moving up the category chasin and 114 hotels are going down. While most changes are just one category up or down, there’s some drastic changes such as Sheraton Penghu in Taiwan that’s going from a Category 1 to 5.

You have until the last day of February to take advantage of current rates. If you’re planning a stay st a SPG property, check the list to see if its category will change and if it will move up or down. If it will get more expensive, you should book now to lock in the lower rate. If it happens to get cheaper after March 1st, then just wait if you can.

• SPG Category 1 Hotels (2,000 – 3,000 Starpoints per room, for a standard room)
• SPG Category 2 Hotels (3,000 – 4,000 Starpoints per night, for a standard room)
• SPG Category 3 Hotels (7,000 Starpoints per night, for a standard room)
• SPG Category 4 Hotels (10,000 Starpoints per night, for a standard room)
• SPG Category 5 Hotels (12,000 – 16,000 Starpoints per night, for a standard room)
• SPG Category 6 Hotels (20,000 – 25,000 Starpoints per night, for a standard room)
• SPG Category 7 Hotels (30,000 – 35,000 Starpoints per night, for a standard room)

If you’re looking for SPG points than the Amex SPG card is offering a 25K sign up bonus which as you can see from redemption rates, it can net you a few nights in the lowers category hotels. There’s plenty of great properties to be found in there.

They had a 30K offer last year, so if you’re not in a hurry for points, you’re probably better off waiting.
