2016 SPG Category Changes Taking Effect March 1st

Starwood’s annual Category changes will take effect on March 1, 2016. A substantial number of their properties, 282 hotels, are changing categories. That’s about a quarter of the SPG lineup.

As expected, this means that SPG hotels are getting more expensive, but not all of them. 168 hotels are moving up the category chasin and 114 hotels are going down. While most changes are just one category up or down, there’s some drastic changes such as Sheraton Penghu in Taiwan that’s going from a Category 1 to 5.

You can find the full list of changes here. Or use this sort-able spreadsheet provided by the always helpful folks on reddit.

You have until the last day of February to take advantage of current rates. If you’re planning a stay st a SPG property, check the list to see if its category will change and if it will move up or down. If it will get more expensive, you should book now to lock in the lower rate. If it happens to get cheaper after March 1st, then just wait if you can.

Here’s the SPG Category breakdown

If you’re looking for SPG points than the Amex SPG card is offering a 25K sign up bonus which as you can see from redemption rates, it can net you a few nights in the lowers category hotels. There’s plenty of great properties to be found in there.

They had a 30K offer last year, so if you’re not in a hurry for points, you’re probably better off waiting.

  1. […] These bonuses don’t seem very enticing when you look at the number alone, but SPG points are pretty valuable. You can usually get a value of over 2 cents per point and sometimes even close to 3 cents. There’s a lot of great SPG properties and each credit card will get you more than enough points for a top Category 7 hotel. With both cards (about 80K points) you can book 4 nights at a Category 6 hotel. Read more about 2016 SPG Category Changes Taking Effect March 1st. […]
